Vols relief pitcher Hollis Fanning has entered the transfer portal, first reported by Mike Wilson of Knox News and confirmed to Rocky Top Insider by a Tennessee spokesman on Monday afternoon.
Fanning, a junior right-hander from Tullahoma, TN, arrived in Knoxville as a true freshman in 2021. After appearing in less than 10 games and pitching a total of six innings across his freshman and sophomore seasons, Fanning found a bigger role on Tony Vitello’s 2023 team.
Fanning threw 14.1 innings across 15 appearances during the year with four games against conference opponents. The 6-foot-8 junior righty allowed 12 hits and two runs during the year while also adding in 24 strikeouts and three walks.

Fanning had one start in his career which came against Alabama A&M in Knoxville on February 21, 2023. Fanning typically operated within one inning of work during most of his appearances but did go one or more innings on six occasions this year.
Fanning’s best outing of his career came in the 2023 regular-season home finale against Belmont in Knoxville. Fanning recorded a career-high three innings of work and struck out seven consecutive batters en route to a 9-5 victory for the Volunteers.
The right-hander did not allow a run in 0.2 innings on the mound during Tennessee’s postseason win against Charlotte on June 2.
Hollis Fanning is the sixth Tennessee player to enter the transfer portal so far, joining OF Alex Stanwich, LHP Jake Fitzgibbons, LHP Jacob Bimbi, RHP Turner Swistak, and LHP Shawn Scott.
