Tennessee football is expected to hire veteran defensive back’s coach Cory Robinson as a defensive analyst, On3’s Matt Zenitz first reported Tuesday morning.

Robinson comes to Tennessee directly from New Orleans where he spent three seasons as the Saints’ defensive back’s coach under both head coach Sean Payton and Dennis Allen.

The Saints ranked in the top five of the NFL in pass defense in two of his three seasons in New Orleans including last season where they ranked second.

Before his three years in the NFL, Robinson had a long career in the college ranks. Robinson served as a defensive backs coach at Maryland, Rutgers, Temple and Toledo.

Robsinson is a Maryland native who played his college football at Central Connecticut State and spent time in the high school ranks at St. Frances in Baltimore. Tennessee defensive lineman Dominic Bailey played his high school football at St. Frances though the two did not overlap.

Tennessee’s secondary has struggled in each of Josh Heupel’s first two seasons including ranking 127th in pass defense during the 2022 season.

Willie Martinez is entering his third season in his second stint of Tennessee football’s defensive backs coach. Martinez has helped raise the talent level, especially at cornerback but the Vols are looking to show signs of improvement on the field this fall.
