Tennessee baseball knocked off Southern Miss 8-4 in game two of the Hattiesburg Super Regional Sunday afternoon.

Both Chase Dollander and Jared Dickey were critical for the Vols in the win. Dickey went one-for-five at the plate but drove in two runs on a clutch two strike, two-RBI single. Dollander allowed four runs and seven hits while striking out seven in eight innings pitched.

Here’s what the duo said after the win.

Chase Dollander

On how Tennessee’s six run inning allowed him to settle down after giving up four runs the inning prior

“It definitely calmed me down a lot. Just knowing that these guys have my back behind me. Zane (Denton) made that diving play in that same inning and he’s like, ‘I got you.’ So, I started throwing more strikes and attacking hitters the way I needed to. Things just started to take off for me and I felt really good.”

On the resiliency of the win

“Just knowing how this team can come after something like that builds a lot of confidence for us. Like you said, it shows a lot of resiliency. I feel like this is going to help us a lot down the road. I know we don’t have much more to go but just being able to have that knowledge of what we need to do and how we need to do it means the world.”

On his hit that put Tennessee ahead for good

“It’s a big time win for us. I think really just trying to focus on staying to the ball. We knew that he had a little bit of (arm-side run) on his fastball and that he was going to throw his changeup a good bit, so just trying to sit one of those pitches. Got a pitch to hit and did damage with it.”

On Tennessee’s six-run fourth inning

“Earlier in the year, we wouldn’t do that (picked each other up) for each other. Just how close this team has gotten is really special and I think we’re just doing great things right now. Credit to Cal (Stark), he’s been working his butt off. Probably works harder than most people that I know. You should have seen his face in the fifth, going into the sixth. It looked like he was dying. But he’s just putting his life on the line for us. It was awesome to see.”

On his two-strike approach

“I’m not going to lie to you guys, that last at-bat where I did it (choked up), I was just trying something because I couldn’t pick up the ball from that guy. I don’t even know. I don’t know if I’ll even do that tomorrow. I wasn’t as short at that point (key hit in the fourth).”
