Former Tennessee running back Len’Neth Whitehead announced his transfer destination via Twitter on Monday evening, as the former Volunteer is headed to play in Athens for the Georgia Bulldogs.

As Whitehead mentions, he is ‘headed home’ because he is a true Athens, Georgia, native.

Whitehead was at Tennessee for three years but only played for one. The former four-star was injured during the preseason heading into his true freshman year, where he was listed at inside linebacker, and thus didn’t play a snap in the 2020 season.

Whitehead returned in the Spring of 2021 at running back and played in eight games in the fall. The six-foot-two, 220-pounder was effective in his complementary role behind Jabari Small, Jaylen Wright, and Tiyon Evans for most of the year, in the backfield. Over the course of the season, Whitehead logged 32 carries for 207 yards and two touchdowns.

Whitehead made a big impact in Tennessee’s 62-24 thrashing over Missouri in Columbia, when the redshirt freshman carried the ball nine times for a career-high 76 yards and caught one pass for 10 yards.

The Athens Academy High School product won SEC Co-Freshman of the Week for his strong performance against the Tigers, becoming the first Vol to do so in nearly two years.

A week later, Whitehead logged a career-high 10 carries against South Carolina for 41 yards. He also scored his first-career touchdown against the Gamecocks, taking it in from two yards out in the fourth quarter.

After dealing with an injury over the course of the next month, Whitehead returned against South Alabama where he had an explosive stat line of six rushes for 60 yards. Whitehead added a touchdown to his day, and his performance against the Jaguars would be the last of his Tennessee career.

Whitehead figured to be a key piece of Tennessee’s running back rotation entering 2022, playing behind Jabari Small and Jaylen Wright. However, his season was over before it started as he tore his ACL in late July. Whitehead missed the entirety of the season, and his absence allowed freshman Dylan Sampson to make an impact as the Vols’ number three running back.

After sitting out the entire season, Whitehead entered the transfer portal on December 5.

Now at Georgia, Whitehead has three years of eligibility left. Whitehead will return to Rocky Top on November 18 when the Vols host the Bulldogs in Neyland Stadium.
