Tennessee had three offensive pieces speak with the media after the Vols’ penultimate spring camp practice on Tuesday morning in Knoxville.
The Vols will have one more practice this week before closing down the spring four-week stretch with the Orange & White spring game in Neyland Stadium this Saturday.
After Tennessee’s Tuesday morning practice, running backs coach Jerry Mack was the first to speak with the media in Knoxville. Mack, a third-year coach on Tennessee’s staff, spoke about the development of his running back room despite having key players limited or out of action due to injury. Mack spoke about the development of Tennessee’s newer faces such as Cameron Seldon and DeSean Bishop, while also touching on the injuries and mindset for Jabari Small and Jaylen Wright.
“The biggest thing from Jabari, which he addressed, was getting his shoulder and trying to get healthy,” Mack said on Tuesday. “He’s been down this whole spring, which has been good for him. He’s put on a little bit more mass, especially in his lower body. You look at his lowers, he’s continued to get stronger, more explosive.”
“I think Jaylen Wright needed to grow as an inside zone runner, really in between the tackles, getting more comfortable in between those noises,” Mack continued on to say. “Hitting the ball downhill, don’t bounce as much, things like that. Reduction from a standpoint of don’t take the big hits. And I think Jaylen, he hasn’t practiced as much as I would have liked him to, but he has surely grown. Those six or seven practices that he did practice in, he was looking like the best version that we’ve ever seen him.”
In addition to Jerry Mack, returning Tennessee wide receiver Bru McCoy and center Cooper Mays also broke down their perspectives of spring camp so far.
