Tennessee football made its biggest splash in the early stages of constructing its 2024 recruiting class Thursday as the Vols beat out Georgia, Michigan State and North Carolina for four-star quarterback Jake Merklinger.
The Savannah, Georgia native ranks as the No. 55 player and No. 6 quarterback in the country according to the 247sports composite rankings and became Tennessee’s highest rated recruit with his commitment.
Tennessee’s, now six-commit, recruiting class is flew up the recruiting rankings after Merklinger’s commitment as the Vols now boast a consensus top 10 recruiting class.
So where do the Vols rank according to a number of recruiting sites?

Tennessee’s class jumped all the way from No. 13 to No. 6 nationally according to the 247sports team rankings. The Vols’ six-commit class is the third best in the SEC, behind only Georgia and LSU.
According to On3, Tennessee’s recruiting class is the nation’s fifth best. Josh Heupel’s third full recruiting class at Tennessee is No. 5 nationally but only No. 4 in the SEC, coming in behind Georgia, Alabama and Florida.
Rivals isn’t nearly as high on the opening stages of Tennessee’s recruiting class, ranking them 10th nationally. The Vols come in behind Georgia, LSU and Florida but only one team ranked ahead of the Vols has fewer commits.
Tennessee’s recruiting class includes a quarterback, receiver, tight end, defensive lineman, cornerback and safety. Five of the Vols’ six commits are blue chip recruits while three rank in the top 100 of 247sports composite rankings.
