Tennessee vs. Virginia Tech Analysis

The Lady Vols may be the lower seed in the matchup, but they came into this year’s March Madness roaring.

In the regular season, they went 25-11 overall and 13-3 in their conference, which includes dominant teams like the South Carolina Gamecocks and LSU Tigers. They beat LSU 69-67 in a hugely popular upset on March 4.

In the tournament so far, they have blown out both their opponents, winning 95-50 against the Saint Louis Billikens and 94-47 against the Toledo Rockets. Both times they covered the spread with ease. Jordan Horston had the highest points (21), rebounds (8), and assists (4) in their Round 1 game, while Jillian Hollinghead, Jasmine Franklin, and Rickea Jackson nabbed the top spot in each category respectively in Round 2.

The Lady Vols are scoring 77.4 points per game this season compared to the 56.4 points that Virginia Tech allows. When the Lady Volunteers hit 56 points or more, their record is 24-11.

On the other side of the court, Virginia Tech is tallying 72.1 points per game, which is 7.6 higher than Tennessee allows. The Hokies beat Chattanooga 58-33 in Round 1 and South Dakota State 72-60 in Round 2. Not quite the blowouts that Tennessee has hammered on their opponents, though South Dakota State was a No. 9 seed — higher than the other team in question.

We’re going with Tennessee on this one, maybe just because they seem to want this one badly. Last year, the Lady Vols lost in the Sweet 16 round to No. 1 seed Louisville. Facing another No. 1 seed this year could be a redemption match.
