Tennessee football officially announced its 2024 primary non conference matchup against North Carolina State Tuesday afternoon. The Vols and Wolfpack will face off in Charlotte in the Duke’s Mayo Classic on Sept. 7.
“We appreciate the Charlotte Sports Foundation and NC State on executing a game of this caliber on short notice,” Tennessee Director of Athletics Danny White said in a statement. “This is another terrific opportunity for our football program and Vol Nation to showcase our brand in one of college football’s perennial marquee contests.”
The Vols were looking for a game in short notice after the SEC recommended Tennessee remove Oklahoma from its 2024 schedule back in the fall.

North Carolina State was looking for a game in short notice after its scheduled matchup with BYU was canceled due to the Cougars joining the Big 12.
“We are thrilled to host a dynamic regional match up that is within driving distance for these two passionate fan bases,” Charlotte Sports Foundation executive director Danny Morrison said. “Tennessee and NC State have incredible ties to Charlotte and bringing them together to play in Bank of America Stadium is going to be an awesome experience. Games like these don’t happen without an amazing title sponsor like Duke’s Mayo and the support of the universities and our partners.”
The Vols and Wolfpack last faced each other in the 2012 Chick-fil-A Kick Off. Tennessee earned a, 35-21, win over North Carolina State — its first of just five wins in Derek Dooley’s final season as head coach.
Tennessee will frequently face off with the ACC in neutral site games over the next three seasons. The Vols open their 2023 season against Virginia at Nissan Stadium in Nashville before facing Syracuse in the 2025 Chick-fil-A Kick Off in Atlanta.
Tennessee’s other scheduled marquee non conference matchups include a home-and-home with Nebraska in 2026-27, a neutral site game against West Virginia in 2028 and a home-and-home against Washington in 2029-30.

Should be a good matchup. Not a big fan of these neutral site games. Why not play them a home-and-home? Danny White needs to rethink agreeing to these games.
