Tennessee vs. Toledo Analysis

The Lady Vols did not play any Mid-American Conference opponents this season, but this is the second year in a row they will face a MAC foe during the NCAA Tournament. Last year, Tennessee defeated Buffalo, 80-67, in Knoxville.

Of course, although the MAC is not one of the elite conferences in the NCAA, Toledo is far from a walkover. In fact, the Lady Rockets have an RPI rating of 28. That’s better than SEC teams Mississippi (24-8), Alabama (20-11), and Georgia (22-11), all of which were given at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament.

Toledo this season has proven it can win on the road against strong competition. On Dec 8, the Lady Vols defeated No. 18-ranked Michigan 71-68. The Wolverines earned a No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the second round with a win over UNLV. They lost to LSU in the second round on Sunday night.

The Lady Rockets added to their resume with the convincing win over Iowa State on Saturday. The Cyclones had an RPI rating of 11.

The Lady Vols, whose RPI rating is 14, have won six of their last eight with those two losses coming to No. 1-ranked South Carolina, which has laid waste to every opponent this season en route to a stranglehold on the odds to win the NCAA Tournament.

One of Tennessee’s wins during that stretch was against No. 3-ranked LSU in the semifinals of the SEC Tournament.

The Lady Vols have proven all season they belong in the second weekend of March Madness, and on Monday night they will clinch a berth in the Sweet 16.

This spread of 14.5 points, on the other hand, is a different story. Look for Toledo to remain competitive in this game and cover the 14.5-point spread.
