Tennessee football made the top seven for highly touted class of 2024 cornerback Ify Obidegwu Monday afternoon.

The Vols have elite company in the blue-chip corner’s top seven, joining Alabama, Georgia, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon and Southern Cal.

The Baltimore, Maryland native included the home state Terrapins in his top seven while every other program has had major success recently on the field. In fact, Maryland, Tennessee and USC are the only schools that have never made a College Football Playoff and both the Vols and Trojans were close last season.

Obidegwu ranks as the No. 158 player and No. 15 corner in the country according to the 247sports composite rankings.

Tennessee got the four-star recruit on campus for the first time last month when Obidegwu visited Knoxville for the Vols’ mid January Junior Day. Tennessee and Oregon are the only two schools that Obidegwu has visited in the first six weeks of 2023.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound cornerback visited Maryland twice in 2022 but didn’t visit any of the other schools in his top group.

Tennessee’s 2024 recruiting class currently contains three commits including four-star Nashville corner Kaleb Beasley. Pairing Obidegwu with Beasley would be a great start to a second straight strong cornerback class for Josh Heupel and defensive back’s coach Willie Martinez.

The Vols’ three commit 2024 recruiting class currently ranks 18th nationally according to the 247sports team rankings.
