Houston opened the 2022-2023 season ranked third following an impressive 2022 March Madness run without two key players in Marcus Sasser and Tramon Mark. The Cougars then added forward Jarace Walker, a five-star recruit who has made an immediate impact.
Despite Purdue having the most Big Ten Conference Championships, that success hasn’t translated to the big dance. The Boilermakers haven’t been to the final since 1969 and have just one Elite Eight appearance in their last 10 tournaments. Led by Wooden Award favorite Zach Edey, however, Purdue has been ranked No. 1 in seven of the last 10 weeks.
After losing to Notre Dame in the first round of the tournament last season, SEC-foe Alabama has inserted itself as one of the favorites to cut down the net at the end of the season. The Crimson Tide find themselves first in both the AP Poll and frequently-cited rating percentage index (RPI).
Tennessee opened at +2500 on BetMGM back in April and is currently tied for the seventh-shortest odds to win the 2023 college basketball tournament. The Vols were ranked as high as No. 2 before back-to-back buzzer-beater losses dropped them to No. 10 in the most recent poll. It goes without saying the upcoming home game against Alabama will be incredibly important.
