Chiefs offensive lineman and VFL Trey Smith will suit up for Kansas City in Super Bowl LVII on Sunday afternoon. When he does, Smith will officially become the 73rd former Volunteer in Tennessee program history to play in the NFL’s biggest game of the year.

Out of those 73 players, 19 of them have played in more than one Super Bowl, with four of those 19 playing for more than one different team in the Super Bowl.

  • Jack Reynolds – LB – 1980 Rams, 1982 and 1985 49ers
  • Marcus Nash – WR – 1999 Broncos and 2001 Ravens
  • Peyton Manning – QB – 2007 and 2010 Colts, 2014 and 2016 Broncos
  • Chris Scott – OT – 2011 Steelers, 2016 Panthers

According to Tennessee Athletics, 39 of the 72 Super Bowl contestants (pre-Trey Smith) have combined for 48 Super Bowl rings.

The Volunteers had a representative in the first-ever Super Bowl in 1967 with Bill Anderson as a tight end for the Green Bay Packers. Tennessee also had players in 1971, 1972, 1977, 1979-1982, 1984-1986, and 1988-1990.

From 1992 until the present Super Bowl in 2023, Tennessee has had a player in every single game except for two – 2009 and 2022.

Including Trey Smith on Sunday afternoon, Tennessee has had 42 players in the Super Bowl since 2000. That includes Tennessee legends such as Peyton Manning, Jerod Mayo, Cordarelle Patterson, Ramon Foster, Derek Barnett (also 2023), Malik Jackson, and brand-new Tennessee defensive analyst Robert Ayers Jr.
