Super Bowl 57 Line Movement: Eagles Replace Chiefs as Favorites

With lines coming out within minutes of the Chiefs’ victory over the Bengals in the AFC Championship game and two weeks between that game and the Super Bowl, there is plenty of time for lines to fluctuate. That is precisely what has happened over the last week.

Let us take you through how the past week has affected the Super Bowl odds, lines, props, and more at the major online sportsbooks. We will also share with you just one week out where the money has been coming in.

Super Bowl 57 Opening Line

At most online sportsbooks, the Super Bowl line opened with the Chiefs a 1-point favorite. With the Eagles being given a point and better value on the Moneyline, Philadelphia bettors jumped on the Eagles — so much so that it has moved in favor of the Eagles. Most online sportsbooks have the Eagles as a one-to-one and half-point favorite.

As far back as data accurately shows in the betting history of the Super Bowl, there has never been a time when one team started as the favorite and the line closed with the other team as the favorite. The closest we have seen to that was when the lines opened as pick ’em and ended up with one of the teams being a favorite (Super Bowls 54 and 48).

For Super Bowl 54 (Chiefs vs. 49ers), the line started as a pick’em and ended with the Chiefs as 1.5-point favorites. The Chiefs went on to win that Super Bowl over the 49ers. Super Bowl 48 (Broncos vs. Seahawks) also saw the line open as a pick’em. The Seahawks ended the week as the favorite and went on to win the Super Bowl.

With a significant amount of early bets being on the Eagles when the Chiefs were favored, it has moved the Super Bowl spread almost unanimously in favor of the Eagles at the moment. Remember, something similar happened to the Chiefs in their game against the Bengals.

Then by the end of the week, especially with good reports on Patrick Mahomes’ health, the line finished with the Chiefs being favored. It is possible that this could happen as the Chief’s bettors could come in late again with a significant amount of wagers that shift the line back in favor of the Chiefs.

Where is the Money?

Here is a look at how much money has been wagered on Super Bowl 57 at DraftKings Sportsbook.

Point Spread

Money is 72% in favor of the Eagles, and bet totals are 70% in favor of the Chiefs.

As mentioned above, with so much money being on the Eagles early, it is not starting to trend back in favor of the Chiefs, at least in the amount of money being wagered. If the trend continues, the game could be a pick’em by kickoff.

Moneyline

The two teams have each taken in 50% of the bets on the moneyline. The total handle is slightly in favor of Kansas City at 55%.

While the spread was slightly in favor of the Chiefs as far as the amount of money being wagered, the moneyline is in favor of the Chiefs when it comes to money being wagered. It is not shocking as betting on the Chiefs with positive odds to win the game with Patrick Mahomes playing in his third Super Bowl in four years it just makes sense.

Total Points

Betting totals are 53% on the Over and 47% on the under for the point total that is between 50 and 50.5 points.

A 50.5-point total is high for any game but especially the Super Bowl. Each of the two teams has pretty good to even great defenses. Yet the offenses are simply that good. Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts are almost unstoppable, even by the NFL’s best defenses when they are on. With the Super Bowl being the biggest stage, expect both players to be on.
