Tennessee basketball is debuting new alternate uniforms in its Saturday evening matchup against Texas in the Big 12/SEC Challenge.
The uniforms are part of the “Tennessee Classic” series paying homage to past Volunteer uniforms. While men’s basketball is the only version of the “Tennessee Classic” currently, the announcement post implies they could be coming in other sports.

The Vols have worn the same two uniforms in every game since the 2020-21 season. Tennessee slowly transitioned from class home white and road orange uniforms that said Tennessee in a straight line on the front in the Nike font that’s used for the midcourt logo.
Tennessee added a “retro” white uniform with Tennessee and Volunteers curved around the numbers on the front of the jersey during the 2018-19 season that became the Vols’ home jerseys by the start of the 2019-20 season.
After a season of wearing the retro uniforms at home and the new Nike font on the road, Tennessee added orange retro uniforms ahead of the 2020-21 season. For 2.5 years, Tennessee has only worn the two “retro” uniforms.

Alternate uniforms have not been common in Tennessee basketball’s recent history but the Vols did wear “smoke grey” uniforms during Barnes’ first season in Knoxville and Tennessee’s first season after switching from Adidas to Nike.
Tennessee is debuting its new uniforms on the big stage. ESPN’s College Gameday is coming to Knoxville for the top 10 tilt between the Vols and Longhorns before they broadcast the game later in the afternoon. College Gameday is broadcasting live from Thompson-Boling Arena at 11 a.m. ET.
Tennessee-Texas is one of the top matchups in the final Big 12/SEC Challenge along with Kentucky-Kansas and Arkansas-Baylor.
