Los Angeles Rams vs. Green Bay Packers, Dec. 19
With a slew of injuries, the Rams have done more triage than tackling this season. They’ve grabbed more Tylenol than touchdowns. Had more contusions than conversions. You get the alliterative idea.
But the NFL doesn’t feel bad for head coach Sean McVay and the Rams. It was only about 10 months ago that the Rams were showered with confetti after winning the Super Bowl on their own field. Flags fly forever, but success is never guaranteed, and teams love to knock off the champs. The 2022 Rams (4-9) are being humbled.
Last week, Mayfield stunned even himself with a 98-yard touchdown drive at the end of the game to lead the Rams to victory. It’s not that we don’t see 98-yard drives, it’s that Mayfield had been a member of the Rams for about 48 hours when he pulled off the comeback. Some of his teammates were probably still just “Hey you,” to the veteran quarterback, who had little time to learn the LA offense. But his football instincts were sharp, and Mayfield’s amazing performance halted the Rams’ six-game losing skid. The question remains to be answered: can Mayfield be as successful on-script as he was last week as an improviser?
The Packers are still technically in the playoff race, but they’ll likely need to win out. The team really doesn’t deserve to be in the playoffs: it ranks 23rd in offense and 21st in defense. The special teams unit is mediocre. Rodgers is showing his age as 32.6% of Green Bay’s drives have resulted in points, which ranks 23rd.
Over/Under Set at 39.5: Take the Under
Maybe the best way to slap money on this game is the Over/Under — set at 39.5 points by FanDuel. The weather should be cold and blustery on Monday night at Lambeau Field.
