Indianapolis Colts at Denver Broncos (-3.5)

Under, Under, UNDER is the word for the NFL in the 2022-23 season so far. The total has gone under a lot in this young season. Why? That’s a question with many possible answers. It might be the fact that NFL teams play fewer starters in the preseason and that’s having a deleterious impact on offenses. It could be that defenses are scheming in ways that offensive coordinators have yet to find a response for.

The total has gone under in all four of the Colts games this season, and in three of the four games played by Denver. In games at Empower Field at Mile High, the total has gone under (there’s that word again) in six of Denver’s last eight games.

Since 2000, according to Fox Sports, the Under hits about 52% of the time. But this season, through 64 games in Week 4, the under has been the correct pick 62.5% of the time — the highest since 1990 through four weeks, according to Pro Football Reference.

Russell Wilson is the Peyton Manning in this Manning Bowl Game. He’s the veteran Super Bowl-winning quarterback in the new uniform of the Denver Broncos. He’s learning a new offense, with new coaches and new teammates. It shows. Through four games, Wilson’s 61.1% completion percentage represents the lowest mark of his long NFL career. The 34-year-old is looking well…34 years old. But that doesn’t mean he can’t find his groove a mile above sea level against the Colts.

The Colts rank 25th in the NFL in yards per play, and that’s largely due to a terrible run attack thus far. The team is 27th in rushing yards, and somehow only has one TD on the ground in four games.

So far, the Thursday Night Football games have been uneven and largely devoid of offensive fireworks. This game seems likely to be in that 20-16 area, with punts, three-and-outs, and stuffed run plays galore.

Best Bet for Thursday Night Football

Bet Under 43.5 (-115) from DraftKings as of this writing. The Colts will have difficulty moving the chains by running the football, and if (and when) they are forced to throw the ball, 37-year-old Matt Ryan will need to find a way to dodge pass rushers. The rapidly aging veteran QB has five intereceptions already for the Colts. The only worry we have for the Under is if the defenses create scoring plays.
