Best Bets for Thursday Night Football
The Chargers and Chiefs looked sharp in their openers and will continue their quest for the Super Bowl this Thursday. It’s still early, but there’s a lot on the line in this AFC West clash.
Chargers +3.5
Both of these teams looked great in Week 1, but what stood out the most was the Chargers’ new-look defense. It was something they knew they had to improve this offseason, and boy did they.
The Chargers intercepted Raiders QB Derek Carr three times in the opener, in addition to sacking him five times. New defensive weapon Khalil Mack had three of those sacks and led a relentless pass rush that had Carr running for his life all game long.
Meanwhile, the Chiefs looked brilliant on offense, destroying the Cardinals 44-21 in a game that wasn’t even as close. Life beyond Tyreek Hill proved to be no problem for Patrick Mahomes as he spread the ball around to 10 receivers on the day, toying with Arizona’s secondary.
The bottom line is that both of these teams are great, but if you give us the points, we’ll take them. The Chargers will put up a much greater resistance defensively than the Cards did, and Justin Herbert has the talent to go toe-to-toe with Mahomes. It’s also a divisional game, which is traditionally played tightly. Take the Chargers with the points.
Total Points Under 54.5
Even though these are two of the most electric offenses in the league, 54.5 points is a lot – especially on a short turnaround. Thursday night games are typically lower-scoring affairs, with six out of 16 games going over 54.5 last year.
The Chargers’ defense is much improved, and the first half of this game could be a couple of heavy-weight fighters feeling each other out. This has the feel of a 27-24 kind of finish.
