Best Bets for NFL Sunday Early Games
Philadelphia Eagles (-4) at Detroit Lions — Sunday, Sept. 11, 1 p.m. ET
The lovable Lions have been the darlings of the offseason this year, and some people are even starting to believe the hype. Whether it’s coach Dan Campbell’s soundbites, an episode of Hard Knocks, or the selection of Aidan Hutchinson, this is a team that’s making some noise. But hype is one thing, and reality is another.
The Lions’ roar will be reduced to a whimper on Sunday when the high-flying Eagles land in the Motor City. The Eagles have shot up the power rankings this year with the addition of stud receiver A.J. Brown and an offensive line that is top three in the league, if not number one. QB Jalen Hurts should be much improved in his third year, and this team has all the ingredients to be one of the top teams in the NFC.
The Eagles absolutely smoked the Lions last Halloween 44-6, in a game in which Detroit had 57 rushing yards. While the Lions have improved, and it shouldn’t be that ugly this time around, the Eagles should still have no problem covering the four points.
Baltimore Ravens (-7) @ New York Jets — Sunday, Sept. 11, 1 p.m. ET
When are the Jets going to catch a break? After an excellent draft that included three first-round picks, there was optimism in New York for the upcoming season. The team selected dynamic Ohio State wideout Garrett Wilson with the 10th pick and snagged RB Breece Hall out of Iowa State early in the second round to give quarterback Zach Wilson some much-needed help on offense.
Unfortunately, Wilson went down in the preseason, and it was just announced that he won’t be returning before Week 4. That leaves Joe Flacco running the show, and while he’s a decent backup, his ceiling is limited.
On the other side, the Ravens are finally getting healthy. There’s hope that RB J.K. Dobbins will be back for this game, but even if he’s not, Baltimore will have no problem running the ball. The Ravens also have one of the best defenses in the league, improved by first-round pick Kyle Hamilton at safety.
This powerhouse squad led by Lamar Jackson will be right in the thick of the Super Bowl conversation come December. They own a 9-2 record against the Jets, with their most recent victory coming in 2019 with a 42-21 W. That score sounds about right for this one.
