#16 Texas Southern Defeats #16 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi In First Four Opener
With Tennessee trending in the right direction for five-star quarterback Nico Iamaleava, the Vols are now one step closer to landing another elite offensive prospect from the same class.
Carnell Tate, one of the top wide receivers from the class of 2023, announced his official Top 5 on Tuesday night, featuring five powerhouse programs. Included in Tate’s list were Georgia, Ohio State, Alabama, Notre Dame, and Tennessee.
On3 Sports‘ consensus rankings have Tate as a five-star wide receiver in the class. In addition, Tate is also ranked by the service as the No. 13 overall player in the nation, the second-ranked wide receiver in the class, and the fourth-ranked player from the state of Florida.

With all the attention that Nico Iamaleava has brought to Tennessee in the last week, the door is open for other top offensive talent wanting to come in and see what is happening in Knoxville. As mentioned last weekend for RTI, Iamaleava is the most valuable type of recruit, as a quarterback, because people will want to play with him. Tate is a great example of a recruit who can look at Tennessee and see a dynamic offense under Josh Heupel, previous success in one year with Cedric Tillman, Javonta Payton, and Velus Jones Jr, and top-level recruits having significant interest in Tennessee.

Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing in at 178-pounds, Carnell Tate is already drawing projections to be a future all-conference player for a Top 25 program.
“Might not be a 4.4 guy on the stopwatch, but likely to only get more explosive once frequenting a college weight room,” 247 Sports Southeast Recruiting Analyst Andrew Ivins said about Tate. “Should be viewed as one of the top pass catchers in a deep 2023 wide receiver class and a potential all-conference type of player for a Top 25 program. Ability to consistently shake defenders and generate big plays will eventually have him on the radar of NFL scouts.”
Ivins also said that Tate is the “type of wide receiver that always seems to be open.”
Tate has been in Knoxville somewhat recently after attending Tennessee’s Junior Day on the weekend of Jan. 22. In addition, according to 247 Sports, Tate does have an official visit scheduled in Knoxville for April 8.
It does look like landing Tate will be an uphill battle for Heupel and company, though. At the time of this publication, 247 Sports’ Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong and Notre Dame Insider Tom Loy have both projected Tate to land at Ohio State. On3 Sports’ Recruiting Prediction Machine is the same way giving Ohio State a 94.7 percent chance to land the elite Florida wideout.
Carnell Tate began playing for IMG Academy in Florida before his junior season and will complete his senior season there as well.
