Tennessee PG Kennedy Chandler Receives Coaching From Georgia Staff

NCAAM 3/2 Preview: LSU Vs. #14 Arkansas

After the Vols’ win over Georgia on Tuesday night in Athens, the head coach of the Bulldogs gave Tennessee point guard Kennedy Chandler some friendly advice on the court.

In a video posted to Twitter from Tuesday, Georgia head coach Tom Crean could be seen giving Chandler instruction following the post-game handshake.

While it was hard to get an idea about what was being discussed in the five-second clip, it looks like Crean can be seen both using his own hip as instruction and showing form in the shot process.

After the game, RTI’s Ryan Schumpert confirmed what had been seen in the video, saying, “Crean talked to Chandler for a good two minutes giving him instruction.”

Chandler finished the second-to-last game of the regular season against Georgia as the Vols’ second-leading scorer on the night with 16 points, only behind Josiah-Jordan James with 23. In addition, Chandler also tallied one rebound, two assists, and four steals in the Vols’ ugly win on Tuesday.

While this is speculation, it does look like Crean could be talking to Kennedy Chandler about driving to the basket. The thought here is that Crean is showing Chandler the correct shooting/driving direction based on where the pressure is coming from – in this case, if an opposing defender is on his hip. Chandler does have a knack for using his inside hand on drives to the basket, for example, putting up the shot with his right hand during a layup attempt on the left side of the basket. The speculation here is that Crean was potentially showing Chander where his shot at the basket needs to be coming from depending on where the pressure from the on-ball guard or sliding forward is coming from.

With one game remaining in the season, Kennedy Chander is Tennessee’s leading scorer on the season (13.6 PPG) with fellow guard Santiago Vescovi hot on his heels (13.5 PPG)

The Vols will return to Knoxville for their regular-season finale against Arkansas at 12:00 noon E.T. this Saturday before the start of the SEC Tournament next week.

  2. I think that Crean was giving him dancing tips, cuz GA sure ain’t gonna be there.

  3. I think all coaches are teachers. I don’t for 1 second that Coach Cream was giving him bad advice. Contrary to that I think he saw tremendous talent in a player and as a teacher explained to him how to improve his game.

  4. Coaches are teachers who, if worth their salt, care for all students. I coach on the high school level and given instruction to all sorts of kids on other teams. Pretty common occurrence actually.

  5. He knew he would not be facing off against Kennedy Chandler again… So why not get on Chandler’s good side and give him as much advice as possible before he goes to the NBA
