NCAAM 2/26 Recap: #17 Tennessee, John Fulkerson Brings Down #3 Auburn 67-62
John Fulkerson, a sixth-year veteran for the Vols and a native of Kingsport, TN, finally checked a box from his bucket list on Saturday.
Following the Vols’ win over No. 3 Auburn on Saturday, Fulkerson had the chance to climb up onto the conductor’s stand and lead the Vols’ band during Rocky Top.
“I remember @fulkerson_john telling me he wanted to lead the band in Rocky Top,” Vol Network reporter Kasey Funderburg said on Twitter after the game. “Glad he could check it off the bucket list.”
Fulkerson finished with five points, nine rebounds, and two assists in 24 minutes of action on the court against Auburn. However, heading into the game, Tennessee didn’t even know if Fulkerson would be playing.
After suffering a hip injury in last Tuesday’s game at Missouri, Fulkerson was limited in practice the rest of the week leading into the Auburn game. On Friday, Vols’ head coach Rick Barnes said that the team was “hoping” he could play, but nothing was for certain.
In the end, Fulkerson was able to play and helped create a historic day in the landscape of college basketball.
While it was a valiant effort, we can confidently say that John Fulkerson is a better basketball forward than he is a musical conductor. But, either way, a legend at Tennessee.
