Tennessee Football Commit Teases Dual-Sport Opportunity

Tennessee commit Ethan Davis is as athletically gifted as they come. Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing in at 221-pounds, though, Davis’ talent does stretch past the football field and onto the basketball court as well.

On Friday afternoon, the four-star Tennessee football tight end commit tweeted out a teaser of him in a Tennessee basketball uniform.

“Leh do it,” Davis said while tagging Vols head coach Josh Heupel, Tennessee Football, and his high school coaches.

But is it a realistic possibility that Davis could wind up playing both football and basketball at Tennessee? According to Davis in a recent interview with GoVols247 of 247 Sports, it’s at least a possibility that he wants to try out.

While speaking with 247 Sports’ Ryan Callahan on Friday, Davis said that being a two-sport athlete may legitimately be on the table.

“They were 100% with it,” Davis said about the Tennessee football staff in an interview with GoVols247. “Me doing dual sports at Collins Hill, I love both sports, and once the opportunity presented itself, it was a no-brainer for me.”

According to Davis, he has even spoken with the Tennessee Basketball staff and head coach Rick Barnes about the possibility.

Davis, a four-star tight end in the 2023 class, committed to the Vols on Dec. 12, 2021. Since his announcement, Davis has established himself as one of the key early foundational pieces of Tennessee’s next recruiting class on Rocky Top. During his football recruitment, Davis hauled in 29 total offers according to 247, including SEC schools such as Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Missouri, Ole Miss, South Carolina, and Texas A&M.

According to the recruiting website Verbal Commits, Davis, a shooting guard on the court, has seven scholarship offers to play basketball. Davis has been offered by Georgia State, Tennessee Tech, Tennessee State, Georgia, Kennesaw State, Middle Tennessee, and Ole Miss.

After committing to the Tennessee Football team in December, Davis recently found himself back in Knoxville for Tennesse’s junior day in late January. During the weekend, a large number of high school recruits from around the country came to Tennessee to meet with the coaching staff and see the program.

Tennessee Basketball’s 2023 class does not have any recruits committed as of now. Meanwhile, Tennessee’s 2022 class only has one commit, four-star point guard B.J. Edwards Jr.
