The transfer portal has opened the door to increased movement throughout college football as the sport has never seen before. Players now have more freedom in switching schools, leading to big-time moves throughout the nation and individual conferences during the off-season.
After Tennessee brought in head coach Josh Heupel, he used the transfer portal in his first off-season to get a jump start on building the roster that he was looking for. And, at the end of the day, some of Tennessee’s most productive players last season were from the portal.
Defensive lineman Caleb Tremblay, wide receiver JaVonta Payton, and kicker Chase McGrath all came in and earned starting positions on the team. Not to mention, quarterbacks Hendon Hooker and Joe Milton III are both transfer portal players from the off-season.
Now in his first full off-season, Heupel has been working the portal again to bring in more experienced talent. The Vols have brought in four players from the portal, including a four-star breakout wide-receiver and a rival’s offensive lineman.
However, at the same time, the Vols have seen players enter the portal as well. In total, 12 Tennessee players have entered the portal since August. Of those 12 departures, half have come in the month of January.
