The Tennessee Volunteers are making a big push for the trenches. On Wednesday evening, Tennessee gave a scholarship offer to Maryland defensive line prospect Devan Houstan.
Houstan, a class of 2023 four-star player according to On3 Sports and Rivals, is the fourth-ranked player from the state of Maryland according to On3’s consensus rankings.
“BLESSED to receive an offer from the University of Tennessee!!” Houstan posted to Twitter on Wednesday.
Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing in at 270-pounds, Houstan is a massive individual on the field. Houstan uses his size and strength to his advantage when swarming the ball carrier or getting after the quarterback. The four-star prospect currently plays for St. James School in Hagerstown, MD.

According to his Twitter account, Houstan has experience playing the defensive line, the offensive line at the left tackle position, and even has the athleticism to run at tight-end.
Houstan has 12 Division-I scholarship offers to date with some prominent offers. The Maryland native has offers from Notre Dame, Penn State, Tennessee, and Pittsburgh. Interestingly enough, though, Tennessee is the only SEC team that has extended a scholarship offer to Houstan.
Devan Houstan has only taken one unofficial visit so far when he took a trip to see Penn State in September of 2021.
According to On3 Sports’ Recruiting Prediction Machine, Penn State currently leads for Houstan’s services with 64.7 percent of the projections. Tennessee, meanwhile, has a 2.9 percent chance according to the same source.
Tennessee already has two recruits locked down in the class of 2023. The Vols have commitments from four-star tight end Ethan Davis and three-star safety/wide receiver Jack Luttrell. According to 247 Sports, the Vols’ 2023 class is ranked fourth in the SEC and 17th nationally.
