Tennessee Flips Four-Star Defensive Lineman From Georgia

Birmingham Bowl Preview: Houston +6 Vs. Auburn

Four-star Tyre West flipped his commitment from Georgia to Tennessee on Wednesday. The talented defensive lineman was poised not to end up at Georgia but a late push from Rodney Garner helped the Vols beat out Florida State.

West ranks as the nation’s 141st best player and the state of Georgia’s 14th best player according to the On3 consensus rankings. The Tifton native ranks as Tennessee’s best commit in its 2022 recruiting class.

Tennessee defensive line coach Rodney Garner has been one of the south’s best recruiters for nearly 30 years. The former Auburn standout defensive lineman helped Tennessee land greats like Jamal Lewis and Terry Fair in the 90s. Now, he is instrumental in Tennessee getting its biggest win on signing day.

West took unofficial visits to Florida State in July and November before officially visiting Tallahassee the first week of December. Tennessee got the four-star on campus for an unofficial visit for the Georgia game and for an official visit last weekend.

All the buzz around West’s recruitment pointed to him flipping from Georgia to Florida State, but the Vols made a late push to earn the blue-chip prospect.

Defensive line isn’t an easy position to play as a freshman in the SEC, but West has a high ceiling and could surprise and earn reps as a freshman next fall.
