Former Tennessee QB Commit Enters Transfer Portal

Big 10 Championship Game Preview

Once upon a time, back in 2017, four-star quarterback Adrian Martinez was a Tennessee commit. Martinez chose to take his talents to Knoxville in May of 2017, however, the commitment didn’t last through the end of the year.

On December 13 of 2017, Martinez and three-star quarterback Michael Penix Jr decommitted from the program on the same day. Martinez ended up going to Nebraska, becoming a record-setting quarterback in several categories. Now, here in 2021, Martinez is looking for a new program and team.

On Thursday afternoon, Martinez officially submitted his name into the transfer portal.

“I have made the decision to enter my name in the transfer portal,” Martinez said through a social media post. “I am excited for the next opportunity ahead!”

As of the time of this publication, Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker has not announced a decision in whether he will turn pro or return to school. On the chance that he does declare for the draft, Martinez would be a fascinating name to look at from the portal. Another would be Heupel’s former quarterback while at UCF, Dillon Gabriel.

Throughout his four-year career at Nebraska, Martinez set a number of records at the quarterback position. Martinez holds the records for “total offense (10,792), completions (670) and 250-yard passing games (16),” according to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg. “He also holds single-season records for completion percentage (71.5 in 2020) and games with 300 or more yards of total offense (7 in 2018).”

“I will always be a Nebraska Cornhusker at heart and proud alum,” Martinez said in his post on Thursday.

Martinez enters the 2021 transfer portal as a three-time captain and as a University of Nebraska graduate.
