Why Brian Maurer didn’t travel to Auburn on Saturday night

All four scholarship quarterbacks have played this season for Tennessee. Only three traveled to The Plains on Saturday for UT’s matchup with No. 23 Auburn, however.

Redshirt senior Jarrett Guarantano, redshirt sophomore J.T. Shrout and true freshman Harrison Bailey made the trip. Sophomore Brian Maurer did not. Maurer made the trip to Arkansas while Shrout stayed at home in Tennessee’s last game out.

“Brian (Maurer) had a really good week (of practice),” Maurer explained to reporters when asked about Maurer’s status following the game. “He played scout team (quarterback) this week. I actually texted him before the game. I said ‘if we win this game, it’s because of the look you gave us this week.’ I thought he done a phenomenal job. We just decided to take three quarterbacks this week based off some injuries on our team.”

Maurer has only appeared in two games this season. He played in garbage time against Alabama, completing one pass for 15-yards. It’s Maurer’s only completion this season, as he filled in for an injured Guarantano against Arkansas and was 0-for-4 before being benched for Bailey. Maurer has rushed for 18 yards on three carries.

The Ocala, Florida native appeared in eight games with four starts, completing 35-of-75 passes for 541 yards and two touchdowns. Maurer threw five interceptions while finishing with 56 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

Tennessee heads to Vanderbilt (0-7) next Saturday looking to snap its five-game losing streak. Kickoff with the Commodores is scheduled 7:30 p.m. ET on the SEC Network.
