Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt canceled Friday afternoon’s practice due to positive COVID-19 tests within the football program, Pruitt told the media.
Pruitt had previously revealed that the Vols had produced 23 positive tests since returning back to campus in June. He did not specify with the media how many positive tests Tennessee had this week that led to the cancellation of Friday’s practice. Pruitt did specify that it was his decision after consulting with Tennessee’s medical department.
“Today, we elected not to practice,” Pruitt said. “We continue to constantly test within our program, and we’ve continued to have very good results, with the exception of the eight days off I gave them after Fourth of July.
“But this week, we had a few more positive tests, so I elected to shut practice down.”
Everyone was re-tested Friday morning, according to Pruitt. Depending on what the results of those tests are will determine if Tennessee practices as scheduled on Saturday.
“Our No. 1 priority is to be able to protect everybody associated with our program and that’s what we’re going to continue to do,” Pruitt said. “As we get the results back, we’ll see where we’re at, and we’ll start practice up accordingly.”
