The Lady Vol basketball program officially announced the addition of Liberty graduate transfer Keyen Green on Wednesday afternoon.
Green, a 6-foot-1 forward/center, brings immediate help to a Tennessee post that desperately needs it. She won the Big South Player of the Year as a sophomore following a 2017-18 season where she averaged 12.9 points per game. Green’s field goal percentage of 61 percent was the best in the Big South and ranked 11th nationally that season. She contributed 2.3 offensive rebounds per game, which ranked third in the conference on her way to recording five double-doubles throughout the season.
“Keyen brings maturity and game experience to our team,” Lady Vols head coach Kellie Harper said in a press release. “She is productive in the paint and aggressively rebounds the ball. She provides us another person of high character, and we are excited to welcome her to our program.”
Green was unable to play her junior season due to a foot injury, so she redshirted for the 2018-19 season. In her comeback season this past campaign, she shot 59 percent and led the team in rebounding with 231 rebounds – 120 of which were on the offensive glass. Green added 23 blocked shots on her way to earning first team Atlantic Sun honors.
In 2016-17, Green was the Big South Freshman of the Year. She earned second team All-Big South honors, made the Big South All-Freshman Team, and was the first player in conference history to win eight Big South Freshman of the Week honors. Green averaged 12.3 points and 8.1 rebounds that season. She was the Big South leader in field goal percentage (.598), offensive rebounds (3.6 rpg), and double-doubles (9) while ranking second in rebounding, fourth in blocked shots (1.0 bpg), sixth in defensive rebounds (4.5 rpg), and 10th in scoring (12.3 ppg).
Green played her high school ball at Phil-Mont Christian Academy where she became the first player in school history to amass at least 1,000 career points and rebounds. She finished her high school career averaging 21.0 points and 13.0 rebounds as a senior, earning first team all-state
The newest Lady Vol graduated in May of 2019 from Liberty with a bachelor’s degree in finance and is currently working toward a master’s degree in business administration (MBA).
Tennessee is coming off of a 21-10 season and 10-6 conference record in Kellie Harper’s first season as head coach. The Lady Vols were likely set to make the NCAA Tournament before the remainder of the season was canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
After the season, guards Zaay Green and Jazmine Massengill announced their intentions to transfer off the Lady Vols’ roster. Kentucky announced the addition of Massengill as a transfer on Wednesday. Green has yet to choose a new destination.
UT also lost post players Lou Brown and Kamera Harris to graduation at the conclusion of the season.
The signing of Green is the third incoming graduate transfer in Lady Vol history and the first of the Kellie Harper era. Green joins fall signees Tess Darby and Destiny Salary in the the 2020 signing class.
