Quarterback

There were a few mistakes from both JT Shrout and Jarrett Guarantano in this game, but why would anyone focus on the negatives from that performance? Both quarterbacks made some impressive throws, and the duo combined for the Vols’ best passing performance of the season. Guarantano had a redemptive outing after last week’s debacle against Alabama, playing arguably the best game of his career considering the circumstances. Shrout played well in his first-ever SEC game, and he impressed with some of his throws and ability to move in the pocket. Neither QB turned the ball over, which is a huge plus after how the first six games of the season against FBS teams have gone.

Who saw that performance coming from Tennessee’s quarterback room? It was by far the best the room has performed all season. JT Shrout was 7-of-11 for 122 yards and a touchdown, while Jarrett Guarantano was 11-of-19 for 229 yards and two touchdowns. Even with their starting quarterback sidelined due to injury, Tennessee combined to throw for a season-high 351 yards and three touchdowns on 18-of-30 passing. Most importantly, though, they didn’t turn the football over.
