Tennessee started a true freshman at quarterback, and the team started out with a bang against one of the top teams in the country. But that early momentum couldn’t last.
Freshman Brian Maurer started at quarterback for the Vols as they hosted No. 3 Georgia, and he helped provide an early spark. Maurer connected with Marquez Callaway for a 73-yard touchdown in the first quarter, and he found Jauan Jennings for a 12-yard score early in the second quarter to give UT a 14-10 lead over the Bulldogs.
That lead wouldn’t hold up, though, as Georgia bulldozed their way past the Vols after that point, scoring 33 unanswered points to end up winning 43-14.
After the game, Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt discussed his team’s play and effort against the Bulldogs, what he saw from Maurer in his first start, Jarrett Guarantano’s play when he came in, and much more.
