Running Backs

It’s hard to critique the Vols’ running backs on Saturday. Ty Chandler looked stout on the Vols’ opening drive of the game, and he had an effective game overall. Tim Jordan returned from his minor injury last week and was productive, averaging 6.6 yards a carry on his five attempts. Eric Gray still hasn’t scored, but he was again shifty and efficient, gaining 32 yards on eight carries and adding a catch for four yards. The Vols’ walk-ons even got some action, as Chip Omer, Fred Orr, and James Christian combined for 68 yards on 11 carries. The only downside I can think of is that the running backs weren’t really involved in the passing game, but that was probably more due to play calling than anything. None of the backs ripped off a huge run either, but that’s not a huge negative in a game like this.

The running backs looked good against the Mocs — as they should. No particular back had a huge day statistically, but each player who carried the rock looked good. Ty Chandler rushed for a touchdown and 46 yards on 10 carries. Tim Jordan returned after missing last week’s game and averaged 6.6 yards per carry. On eight carries, Eric Gray rushed for 32 yards, which is as much as walk-on Fred Orr rushed for on seven carries. Fellow walk-on Chip Omer contributed 24 yards on two carries including a long of 18 yards.
