Safety
S1: Nigel Warrior, Jaylen McCollough, Theo Jackson
S2: Trevon Flowers, Shawn Shamburger, Brandon Davis
STAR: Shawn Shamburger, Tyus Fields, Cheyenne Labruzza
Heading into the start of fall camp, it’s pretty easy to pencil in who should be starting for the Vols at both the safety positions. Nigel Warrior is one of the most experienced players on Tennessee’s entire team, and Trevon Flowers flashed a ton of potential when healthy last season and looked good in the spring.
Everything other than that is completely up for grabs, though.
The STAR position is a very versatile spot that Jeremy Pruitt and Derrick Ansley have been trying out a lot of players. There may not be a set “starter” at that spot this season; it could just be a position where another defensive back plays when UT puts six DBs on the field. Warrior himself can play there, as well as cornerback Bryce Thompson. As of now, Shawn Shamburger looks like a likely defensive back to see a lot of time there.
Jaylen McCollough looked solid in the spring and had a great Orange & White Game, and Tyus Fields looked good at times in the secondary. Those two young players as well as some of the other inexperienced players in this group will all be contending for spots in the two-deep this fall.
