Trevon Flowers, S
Before an injury cost him a large chunk of his freshman season, Trevon Flowers was looking like he was going to have a breakout campaign in 2018.
Flowers was one of two true freshmen to start in the secondary for Tennessee in their season opener against West Virginia — the other being Alontae Taylor. He recorded five tackles and a pass breakup in that contest, and he flashed some potential against Florida and particularly against Georgia down in Athens.
It looked like things were really starting to click for Flowers heading into Tennessee’s bye week. Then, his season got derailed.
Flowers suffered a broken collarbone during a practice during UT’s bye week, and he had to sit out the next five weeks as he recovered from surgery. Flowers returned for the Vols’ last two games of the season against Missouri and Vanderbilt, but his role was minimal on defense and was mostly contained to just special teams.
If Flowers can remain healthy in 2019, he has a very good chance of being the biggest breakout player on Tennessee’s defense this season. Flowers has great instincts and has a chance to be a real ball hawk in UT’s defensive backfield. Throw in the fact that he’s being coached by two of the best secondary coaches in the country in Jeremy Pruitt and Derrick Ansley, and there’s plenty of reason to believe 2019 can be a big year for the true sophomore.
