He may not be rated as one of the top players in the state of Tennessee, but don’t get it wrong; Cooper Mays is absolutely a high priority for the Vols’ coaching staff. They want him in the 2020 class, and they’re going to fight tooth and nail for him.

Mays is, of course, the younger brother of Georgia offensive lineman Cade Mays and is the son of former Vol Kevin Mays. Cooper plays in the interior of the offensive line and is viewed as one of the top center prospects in the 2020 class. Tennessee has a huge need at center moving forward, and Mays has the skill set to be a natural center.

The Vols have a ton of momentum with Mays. He’s visited UT four times in 2019 alone, and both Jim Chaney and Will Friend have been pivotal in his recruitment. Chris Weinke has also been involved with Mays.

There’s a chance that Mays could even play defensive line in college. Tennessee has discussed that with him, and he’s open to the idea. Mays was an All-State offensive lineman last season, but he was also named the Defensive Lineman of the Year in his region. That versatility makes him a huge target for many SEC schools.

Tennessee has to like where they are with Mays, but Georgia is going to be one to watch here. Clemson also needs to have an eye kept on them, and if the Tigers ever come calling and offer Mays, watch out.

Barring that, though, the Vols are in a great spot with Mays.
