Lady Vols Head Coach Hot Board

Matthew Mitchell

Head Coaching Record:

Morehead State head coach (2005-07): 30-29
Kentucky head coach (2007-present): 281-125

Pros:

Not only has Matthew Mitchell been a successful head coach at Kentucky, but he has ties to UT as well. He served as a graduate assistant under Pat Summitt for the 1999-2000 season before moving on to be an assistant at Florida then at Kentucky before taking the Morehead State head coaching position. Mitchell is a two-time SEC Coach of the Year (2010, 2012) and has led the Wildcats to the NCAA Tournament in nine of the last 10 years. He took them to their first Elite Eight appearance since 1982 when he got them there in 2010. Overall, he’s been to three Elite Eights and five Sweet Sixteens with Kentucky.

Cons:

Just like with Walz, Mitchell’s contract could be a sticking point. He’s also making over $1 million a season and agreed to a new contract in 2017. Not only that, but can Mitchell get the Lady Vols further than Holly Warlick did? He’s not been able to get Kentucky beyond the Elite Eight, and it’s not like Kentucky doesn’t focus on basketball as a school.

  1. She is a good coach. She did not have a good many players who could make enough shots against good teams. Possibly rebounding could have been stronger. Making the shots was the deal. Coach couldn’t shoot em in herself. Of course there is defense and I didn’t see them play enough to comment.

UConn and Tennesee will revive their competition in the near future which will be a good thing raising rafters like the old days!

  2. I think the next Tennessee Vol Coach should be Kara Lawson or Candace Parker. GREAT ATHELETES!
