Though it’s doubtful that Jarrett Guarantano will get unseated at quarterback this year, that’s not going to stop incoming freshman signal-caller Brian Maurer from trying.
Unlike J.T. Shrout last year, Maurer is getting to enroll early and go through the spring with Tennessee’s team. Shrout didn’t join the team till the summer last year and ultimately redshirted and didn’t appear in any games last season. It’s likely Maurer will be in line for a redshirt this year even with him joining the team early, but getting in for the spring will be vital to his development in the future.
Maurer should benefit from the hiring of Jim Chaney as well, and he seems like a strong fit in any type of offense UT wants to run down the line as long as he develops well mechanically.
