Arkansas (Grad Assistant) — 2008-09
Illinois (TEs/Fullbacks) — 2010-11
Arizona State (TEs/Recruiting Coordinator) — 2012-15
Memphis (OC/TEs) — 2016
Notre Dame (OC) — 2017-present
Pros: Not only does Chip Long have high level play-calling experience, but he’s a proven recruiter too. He served as Arizona State’s recruiting coordinator for four seasons, and he’s proven himself to be an effective play-caller at both Memphis and Notre Dame. Though he hasn’t coached in the SEC since he was a graduate assistant at Arkansas, he has a good amount of Power Five experience.
Cons: It doesn’t make a lot of sense for Long to leave Notre Dame to take the same job at Tennessee, especially if he has head coaching aspirations. The 35-year-old is from Alabama, yes, but he doesn’t seem to have as strong of connections with Pruitt as others on this list. Plus, his Notre Dame offense haven’t exactly lit the world on fire.
