Kendal Briles
Track Record:
Baylor (WRs/Recruiting Coordinator) — 2008-11
Baylor (Passing Game Coordinator/WRs) — 2012-14
Baylor (OC/QBs) — 2015-16
Florida Atlantic (Associate Head Coach/OC/QBs) — 2017
Houston (Associate Head Coach/OC/QBs) — 2018-present
Pros: As a coach, Briles has proven himself to be one of the better offensive minds in the country. Houston ranks in the top 10 in the entire country in total offense and scoring offense this year, and his Florida Atlantic offense did the same in 2017. He also had great success at Baylor calling plays and developing quarterbacks. As a play-caller, Briles is hard to match.
Cons: But the drawbacks are very, very clear on Briles. He was tied to one of the worst scandals in college football with the lawsuit that was filed against Baylor that alleged over 30 football players raped over 50 women from 2011-14, a period where Baylor coaches were accused of creating a toxic environment that encouraged that sort of behavior. While Briles himself was never directly implicated in the lawsuit, his name has been tied to it. It didn’t stop Lane Kiffin from hiring him at FAU nor Major Applewhite from bringing him in to Houston, but it’s a big red flag regardless.
