Tennessee quarterback Jarrett Guarantano and wide receiver Marquez Callaway put an exclamation mark on what was arguably the Vols’ best first half of the season on Saturday.
The Vols were leading No. 11 Kentucky 10-0 as the first half was coming to a close, and the Vols were trying to find a way to add to their lead before the half ended. Tennessee snapped the ball with six seconds left, and it became apparently quickly that they weren’t going to complete a quick pass and use their last timeout to set up a long field goal.
With no time left on the clock in the first half, Guarantano eluded a pass rush by Kentucky, stepped up, and threw a pass into the end zone. Callaway ran across the end zone and somehow found a way to come down with an incredible touchdown reception on a Hail Mary throw by Guarantano.

That touchdown grab was good for 39 yards, and it was Callaway’s first touchdown reception of the season. It was his first receiving touchdown since he caught a score in the Vols’ season finale against Vanderbilt in 2017.
The huge touchdown play was an exciting finish to a first half that saw the Vols dominate the No. 11 Wildcats. Tennessee not only out-scored Kentucky 17-0, but they out-gained them 241 yards to 68 yards on offense, and the Vols made five plays that went for 20 or more yards.
Guarantano completed eight of his 12 pass attempts for 175 yards and that touchdown in the first half. Callaway had two catches for 56 yards and that touchdown.
