Tennessee hasn’t played another team more in football than they have Kentucky. Saturday will mark the 114th meeting between the two schools in football, and it will be only the second time in the last 40 years that the Wildcats come into the match-up as the higher-rated team.
Kentucky (7-2, 5-2 SEC) is rated as the No. 11 team in the country by the CFP Committee, and they’re No. 12 in the AP Poll. The Vols (4-5, 1-4 SEC) aren’t ranked at all. That marks the first time the Wildcats have been rated and Tennessee hasn’t when the two teams have faced-off since 1977.
In fact, that 1977 team has a lot of significance for this Saturday’s game.
Not only are the Wildcats looking to end a losing streak in Neyland Stadium that dates back to 1984, but they’re looking to continue a season that’s been their best in football since that 1977 team. Kentucky is hoping to beat both Florida and Tennessee in the same season since 1977, are looking to beat the Vols in back-to-back years for the first time since 1976 and 1977, and are trying to get six SEC wins for the first time since 1977.
The Vols, meanwhile, are fighting tooth and nail to get to a bowl game.
Tennessee needs to win at least two of their last three games to automatically qualify for a bowl game. History would say UT has a great chance this Saturday of finding a win since they own a 79-25-9 record over Kentucky.
But this isn’t a typical Kentucky team. This Wildcat team played for the SEC East title last weekend against Georgia, and they’re assured a winning season in the SEC for the first time in decades.
