Tennessee’s gauntlet is now over, but that doesn’t mean their schedule is easy for the remaining five weeks. This weekend, they face a South Carolina squad that is looking to try and salvage a season that had high hopes coming in.

The Vols (3-4, 1-3 SEC) travel to Columbia, South Carolina to take on the Gamecocks (3-3, 2-3) on Saturday night under the lights of Williams-Brice Stadium. South Carolina is coming off a much-needed by week for them while Tennessee just faced No. 1 Alabama last weekend and got smoked by a score of 58-21.

Both programs need a win on Saturday to help them keep their bowl hopes alive. A loss doesn’t disqualify them by any means, but it would make their postseason goals exceptionally more difficult given the remaining schedules for both programs.

Tennessee already has one big road win in conference play when they toppled Auburn 30-24 two weeks ago. The Gamecocks, meanwhile, have played three SEC games at home and have only won one so far, and that was a 37-35 victory over Missouri. They lost 41-17 to Georgia and 26-23 to Texas A&M at home as well.

The Vols used to dominate this series, but South Carolina has made it far more competitive over the last decade. Tennessee was 19-2-2 against South Carolina before the start of the 2005 season, but the Gamecocks have won seven of the last 13 contests between the two schools including five of the last eight. South Carolina currently has a two-game winning streak over the Vols dating back to a 24-21 win in 2016.

Not only has South Carolina made this once lopsided series a rivalry, but it’s been a close game whenever the two teams have met. All six of the previous meetings have been decided by one score, and both teams have won three games apiece in those six contests.
