Special Teams

Joe Doyle was once again a good special teams weapon for Tennessee on several punts, but the Vols were otherwise very lackluster and mistake-prone on special teams on Saturday. They allowed their first big return of the season when Josh Jacobs ripped off a 42-yard return to start the game, and Ty Chandler made a very poor decision when he called for a fair catch after he had already caught the ball on the opening kick-off of the second half. Brent Cimaglia missed his only field goal attempt of the game, failing to connect on a 41-yard attempt in the third quarter. Aside from that one big return by Jacobs, however, the return units did a decent job.

For the first time all season, I thought Tennessee’s special teams was a noticeable weakness. Now, I do believe part of it was because of how good Alabama is within all three units of its football team, but the Vols didn’t help their case either. Brent Cimaglia had a horrific field goal attempt, Joe Doyle had a so-so day, Ty Chandler forgot what he was doing on a kickoff, and the coverage teams weren’t the best.
