Final Thoughts from the Vols’ Upset Win over No. 21 Auburn

Offensive Line

For the first time this season, Tennessee’s offensive line was average, at least in pass-pro. Being average isn’t okay, but compared to how bad the O-line has been at times this season, it’s a step in the right direction. The Vols were particularly better at protecting Guarantano. Though he was hit 11 times, the O-line gave their quarterback enough time to toss for a career-high 328 yards on the afternoon.

Auburn’s defensive scheme was rather basic, trying to produce a pass-rush with a simple four-man rush 48 times. At times, the Tigers were successful, producing three sacks, but you saw the likes of Drew Richmond and Trey Smith start to take a step in the right direction. Nathan Niehuas made his first career start at right guard and held his own, but looked lost at times.

The coaching staff attempted to help out the offensive line by lining up a tight end or a running back in a wing position, but it wasn’t all that helpful. If this team is going to have a strong November, the O-line is going to have to step up and play better in the running game. The group produced 25 negative runs to just seven positive runs on the afternoon.

Guarantano isn’t always going to play lights out.
