More Big Plays

Last year, Tennessee only had four plays on offense that went for 50 or more yards all of last season. This year through five games, they’ve already surpassed that mark.

This season, the Vols have had six plays total 50 yards or more on the year. They’ve shown the ability to be more explosive this year, and that goes beyond just the big gains like that.

In 2017, Tennessee totaled just 132 plays on offense that totaled 10 yards or more. That’s an average of just 11 plays per game that went for 10 or more yards. Tennessee ran a total of 732 plays last season, which means only 18 percent of their plays went for 10 or more yards. This season, Tennessee already has 63 plays that have gone for 10 or more yards, an average of 12.6 such plays a game. They’ve run 317 offensive plays this season, meaning that 19.9 percent of their offensive plays have gone for 10 or more yards.

It doesn’t just stop there, though.

Tennessee had just 18 plays of 30 or more yards all of last year, and this season they already have 12 plays that have totaled at least 30 yards. The Vols averaged just 4.77 yards per play on offense last season, and this year so far they’re averaging 5.68 yards per play.

Once again, Tennessee’s offense isn’t where it needs to be overall, but they’re looking at least a little more explosive this year than they did last season.
