Final Thoughts from the Vols’ Win over ETSU

Offensive Line

Tennessee’s offensive line got off to a slow start once again, especially in the rushing game. I counted 21 rushing plays in which the offensive line did not block well. The group did generate 19 positive run-blocks, but against an FCS opponent, Tennessee should not have more negative run-blocking plays than positive. The problem along the line right now is its inconsistency, specifically on the interior of the line. Jahmir Johnson, Ryan Johnson and Jerome Carvin will have a nice drive, and then follow it up with a horrible drive. If it can find consistency, Tennessee will have continued success in the running game.

The offensive line has actually fared well in pass-protection, only allowing three pressures against the Bucs. Tennessee hasn’t tossed the ball around a whole lot, but when it has, the line has stepped up and provided Guarantano time to throw the football. Helton has also done a nice job of creating quick, easy throws for Guarantano, contributing to the offensive line’s success in the passing game.
