Establish a Consistent Run Game
Tim Jordan was dominant in the opener, rushing for 118 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries. Jordan showed great vision and toughness but could have rushed for at least 150 yards if the offensive line was more consistent, specifically the interior of the line.
In the first and second quarters against West Virginia, Jahmir Johnson, Ryan Johnson, Brandon Kennedy, Chance Hall, and Jerome Carvin all struggled to come out of the gates strong. After shuffling different rotations, the group finally got in a rhythm towards the end of the first half as it began opening holes for Jordan.
With Jahmir Johnson at left guard and Carvin at right guard, the two newcomers had key blocks in the game. So did Kennedy, but following the news he’ll miss the entire season with a torn ACL, Ryan Johnson takes over the center role. Offensive line coach Will Friend will try several combinations on Saturday, but these are the three that need to step up and spark the running game.
