Running Backs
The running backs were impressive on Saturday, specifically Tim Jordan. The sophomore rushed for 118 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries against West Virginia’s 3-3-5 defense. Despite Tennessee’s struggles up front, Jordan showed great vision and toughness, breaking 10 tackles on the afternoon. Madre London and Jeremy Banks also showed promise following Ty Chandler’s departure with a concussion. If the offensive line can sort out its issues up front, Jordan will rush for 1,000 yards this season. Here’s what I saw out of the running backs in the opener.
Tim Jordan
Broken tackles: 10 on 20 carries
Positive runs: 14, six of them being for a first down
Madre London
Broken tackles: 2 on five carries
Positive runs: 2, one of them being for a first down
Jeremy Banks
Broken tackles: 1 on five carries
Positive runs: 3, one of them being for a first down
As a group
Broken tackles: 13 on 38 carries
Positive runs: 19, nine of them being for a first down
North/South runs: 21
East/West runs: 10
Positive runs (at least 3-4 yards): 20
Negative runs: 14, 10 of them due to poor blocking from the offensive line
Another aspect of the offense that made Tennessee fans excited was the use of the fullback. Helton used a fullback 15 different times throughout the game. The fullback was used in a blocking role, as that position didn’t record a single rush or reception.
Lined up at fullback
Eli Wolf: 9 times
Andrew Craig: 4 times
Austin Pope: 2 times
