Stock Up: Keller Chryst, QB
This time last week, I felt good about where Jarrett Guarantano was and felt like he was beginning to grab control of the Vols’ quarterback battle. Then Keller Chryst had a solid performance in UT’s first scrimmage, and he followed that up with more consistency during practice throughout the week.
Guarantano himself had a fine scrimmage and looked every bit as good as Chryst in open portions of practice this past week, but Chryst has definitely gained ground and reasserted himself in the battle for the Vols’ starting quarterback job after a little beat of a weaker first week. Chryst has been able to make a variety of throws, and he’s shown a little bit stronger of an arm than he did in the first week of camp.
If the two are neck-and-neck all the way up to kickoff of Tennessee’s match-up with West Virginia, then Chryst’s experience and bigger body might win out over Guarantano. But that’s still two weeks away.
