Last season, the Vols didn’t return any starts at quarterback. Quinten Dormady, Jarrett Guarantano, and Will McBride were all first-time starters last year when they all got their respective calls to lead Tennessee’s offense.
This year, the Vols still don’t have a great deal of experience among their signal callers, but it’s a lot more than last season.
Stanford grad transfer Keller Chryst has well over half of the total amount of returning starts in this group, and he went 11-2 in his 13 starts at quarterback with Stanford in 2016 and 2017. But only three of those victories came against schools that finished the season with a .500 or better record.
Guarantano, meanwhile, was just 1-5 as a starter for the Vols last season, and McBride lost his one and only start at quarterback.
Tennessee will still be relying on a relatively unproven quarterback no matter who starts for them this season, but there won’t be nearly as many unknowns with this position as last year.
